Carrefour opens pop-up store in Brussels
A Carrefour pop-up store in Brussels: a European first in the mass distribution sector
In a rapidly changing retail market, Carrefour, one of the world's leading mass retailers, is opening its first pop-up store dedicated to second-hand goods. This unprecedented initiative, which opened its doors on 17 April in Brussels, marks a turning point in the European mass retail sector.
The booming second-hand market: an opportunity for traditional brands
The rise of second-hand goods
Fueled by an awareness of the impact of overconsumption, the second-hand market continues to grow. Indeed, according to Global Data, its turnover in France is estimated at $5.5 billion in 2023 , representing an exponential growth of 104% in five years.
Second-hand goods are firmly anchored in the consumption habits of France. The number of French people selling second-hand goods (36%) is almost equivalent to those buying them (40%), highlighting a true circular economy.
Faced with this emerging trend, large retailers must innovate and adapt to meet new consumer expectations.
Carrefour Reeborn at the forefront of innovation
In this dynamic, Carrefour stands out by launching its very first pop-up store dedicated to second-hand goods: Carrefour Reeborn . Launched in November 2023, it offers an online platform and an application allowing the sale and purchase of second-hand items. Individuals can sell their goods there, while Carrefour stores can also sell their stocks of non-food products. Located in Brussels, this innovative concept opens up new perspectives in the European retail sector.
Increased sales potential thanks to pop-up
Users register on C arrefour Reeborn and publish their items on the online platform. Thanks to the pop-up they can increase their chances of selling by displaying their products in the pop-up shop. If a customer wants to purchase one of the items displayed in the pop-up, they can easily do so via an available digital terminal. The seller then receives instant payment for the item sold.
In addition, the pop-up shop offers a coworking space with free Wi-Fi access. For small gourmet breaks, coffee and a Carrefour Buybye point of sale are available.
A commitment to more sustainable retail
Rethinking our purchasing habits: towards a more responsible retail market?
As a company committed to the transformation of retail, at Nestore , we are convinced that the future of retail is through more sustainable and responsible practices . This initiative seems to demonstrate Carrefour's commitment to more responsible commerce. The brand is responding to a growing demand while helping to reduce the environmental impact of its activities.
What is certain is that mass distribution still has a lot of progress to make in terms of CSR, and distinguishing a simple communication stunt from a real intention to act remains tricky.
